Advocate, Sex Blogger, Survivor: Who is Stef Woods?

| 03/26/2011

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Stef Woods, you’ve had the pleasure. She’s a strong, inspiring, loving and willful character. My initial encounter with Stef was at the first Tweetup I ever hosted – with Nicole Nolte at Caribbean Breeze. As her head of gorgeous red hair turned away from the cameras my intrigue was sparked. I’d read her blog – mouth agape as she spared no delicious details – and wanted more. Who was this wonderful creature, so brave and daring yet so seemingly camera shy? I quickly learned that shy was one word I would never again use to depict the enchanting Ms. Woods. This Wellesley graduate, attorney turned sex blogger, was a lady in hiding. Through all her gritty online stories, Stef remained nameless. She blogged, she tweeted, she served it straight up – anonymously as @CityGirlBlogs.

A woman of many (some fairly ridiculous) dating tales, friends had encouraged Stef to write it down, amuse the masses – and thus her blog was born. But what started as sharing mere juicy details has morphed into a way of life for Stef. Shortly after a diagnosis of breast cancer early last year, Stef’s time was thrown into her writing – not practicing law at the time. Watching her progress since we first met has been a pleasure, once again, and an added inspiration. While still filling readers in on those intimate details they crave, Stef has also become a champion for awareness on sexual health, empowerment and education, and – true to her own heart – an advocate for screening/early detection of breast cancer.

Recently Stef has come forth with her identity and knowingly come to terms with the realization she will not practice policy law again. Bitter sweet, she has found a new path that unexpectedly engulfed and impassioned her.

“There’s a definite double standard when it comes to women and sexuality, especially in the workplace. I wish that wasn’t the case, but I don’t regret decisions I made in the past or care to change the fact that I’m comfortable with my sexuality. I started blogging for fun and never imagined that it would lead to a new career path. I now do freelance writing and product reviews for Lotus Blooms and Fascinations at Fun Love, and I’m a member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists.”

Next month Stef Woods will participate in Fashion for Paws in honor of the Washington Humane Society. On April 9th she will walk down the runway with Flake, her steadfast companion, on her 38th birthday – marking almost one year since her detection of breast cancer, and celebrating her recent completion of chemotherapy and radiation. Don’t miss DC’s top fashion event, and cheer on Stef, the girl rocking the red buzz cut and the Betsey Johnson outfit.

“I came to DC in 1993 for a college internship and never left. After 17 years in this city, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”
