DC’s Brightest Young Things Lit Up the Newseum Last Night

When I hear the word “museum” I think of the library. That place where you are generally quiet, there are plenty of things to read, and you have to behave yourself because there are more rules there than most other public places. Like me, I am sure a lot of you have had daydreams of running around and touching things in a museum, just because you aren’t allowed to. Enter BrightestYoungThings.com and their no dress code “Night at the Newseum II” event. Way to make those daydreams come true. This was my first afterhours museum party and I really wasn’t sure what to expect.
So here’s the set up. You buy your event tickets, trade them in for wristbands and you are free to roam, dance, drink, snap pictures and mix and mingle with the young and fabulous of DC. Oh and check out the exhibits! Mixed into the crowds of people are ladies with blue pouches and drink tickets. No money is handled at the bar, (unless you want to tip the bartenders for their mixology). Obviously it’s not a traveling full bar so your selection is limited. I am a rum and coke girl, and they didn’t have dark rum! So I settled for whatever their evening specialty, a delicious Smirnoff and Vitamin Water medley.
The music is heard from every floor with a projector flashing crazy neon graphics, glow rings and blow up hammers/guitars onto the dance floor, the vibe electric! Unlike the club and bar scenes, the people partying were very diverse and all united, basking in the same glow. There was a coat check, and if your dancing shoes were pinching your feet ladies, the tables and chairs in the food court area were open for a pit stop!
So, I’ll admit, I was super excited when I found out about these treasure chests that were supposed to be hidden around the event, “full” of stuff to grab. Maybe I got to the boxes too late, but they were all ravaged and the lonely chest I did find was a sorry sight. Note to self, lower one’s expectations. I guess in my mind I was thinking a treasure chest like in Pirates of the Caribbean. Maybe even with a Johnny Depp look alike nearby? What?…A girl can dream!
While I was running amuck on other floors, I noticed some action happening on the dance floor. A circle was roped off and it looked like there was some sort of storytelling through interpretive dance. But then again, maybe that is how I saw it. It could have been the juice messing with my perception.
All in all, it was a great night, and even better event. So many things to do, I think anyone would enjoy it. Everyone seemed friendly and open to chat about the exhibits, it’s a great ice breaker really. Or you can call out the drunken couple making out in the Berlin Death Tower if you really wanna get someone talking! There were caricature artists available, photo booths to get silly in, alcohol flowing, and music blasting. Did I mention outdoor access to a beautiful city nightscape? If there was another event when it
gets warmer, I would go again, and spend more time out there. Gentleman, if you are looking to impress a lady with your culture and worldliness this is definitely a good first date adventure. If that doesn’t work, you could always take her for a ride in the glass elevator, complete with bar..
This was my first trip to the Newseum and I was thoroughly impressed with the building itself. I will definitely have to come back on a regular visit. The flashing lights, the thumping music and bars around every corner was a bit of a distraction!
