Washington DC 2011 Travel & Adventure Show
Attention all travel enthusiasts, adventure seekers, foodies…and anyone with a few hours to spare this weekend. If you are in the District, you should make your way to the Convention Center to explore the 7th Annual DC Travel & Adventure Show.
I’ve been in DC for almost a decade, and while the city has grown on me, I think most would agree when I say that the District could due with an extra dash of spice every now and then.
Dubbed the “Show for REAL Travelers,” the DC Travel & Adventure show will provide that spice figuratively with a number of on-site activities and literally with culinary treats from *9 Embassy Chefs* and an array of local restaurants.
Here’s a short list of must-sees, must-tries and must-haves:
Budding Adventure Seekers
- Scuba Diving sponsored by www.BeADiver.com
- Show attendees will have a chance to jump into the 18,000-gallon dive pool and receive instruction on the basics of scuba diving.
- Wild Fire Adventures Challenge Course (www.wildfireadventures.com)
- This is certainly a fun activity for the competitive types. You can race through the short obstacle course run by two local firefighters. It just might be good practice for their upcoming Wildfire Mud Race on March 26th & 27th.
- Virtual Hang Gliding Simulator sponsored by Kitty Hawk Kites
- In driving school, you stick with the parking lot until you get the technique down, then you let ‘er rip on the highway. This Nintendo 64 powered simulator allows you to try your hand at hang gliding without the hassle of being thousands of feet off the ground.
Culture Enthusiasts
The place for you to be is the Global Beats Stage. There will be performances all weekend from an array of genres and styles including Jazz, Indian Dance, Irish Dance, Thai Kickboxing, Arabic Fusion, African Dance, and Hip Hop/Modern beats.
Aspiring and Veteran Foodies
Your best bet is to hang around the culinary stage all weekend. There will just be too much good food to miss if you risk venturing elsewhere.
- Chefs from the Belgian, Korean and Norwegian Embassies will be leading demonstrations on Saturday morning starting at 11am
- The International Fiery Foods Challenge kicks off on Saturday at 2pm
- On Sunday at Noon, author Mark DeCarlo will lead a cooking demonstration where three participants will have the opportunity to make his famous guacamole on site
- Later at 1pm, chefs from the Sri Lankan, Moroccan and Hungarian Embassies will take the stage to demonstrate their culinary talents
Is that enough info to entice you to go? Hope so!
