Hiking the Billy Goat Trail [on the blog]

Today I hiked the Billy Goat Trail in Potomac, Maryland with some friends. Who knew we had such wonderful scenery in our backyard? A mere twenty-minute drive from DC, the trail follows a path between the C&O Canal and the Potomac River within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Outdoor enthusiasts come to walk, hike, run or bike, and water babies have options to paddleboard, canoe or kayak.

The full distance of the trail is 4.7 miles, which is divided into three sections — A, B, C — with trail A the most popular and noted as the most challenging. Not for the faint-hearted, the A trail requires use of both hands and feet to tackle rocky terrain and a steep climb on a cliff face.

The parking lot across from Old Anglers Inn offers access to Trail A and B, while Trail C is best accessed from Carderock, Maryland – both of these options offer free parking.

Just did Billy Goat Trail A this weekend! What a fantastic hike! The views were incredible, the trail was challenging and this late in the year it wasn't crowded at all.
