In a city known for its contributions to jazz (D.C. is, after all, the hometown to several famous jazz musicians, including Duke Ellington), it is not uncommon to find clubs that offer live jazz music most nights of the week. However, finding a venue that offers live jazz music conducive to conversation and an intriguing cocktail list in the heart of Dupont Circle is a bit tricky. But thanks to One Lounge and its new Tuesday night Sunset Set jazz series, your search is over.

This past Tuesday night was the first of the Sunset Set series, and the crowd at One Lounge was treated the soothing sounds of local jazz musicians Pete Muldoon, Eric Wheeler and Lena Seikaly.

Throughout the evening, locals mingled at the dimly lit bar, sipped drinks at candle lit tables and dined on the outdoor patio where the music was still audible, but the air was refreshingly cooler.

According to Seth McClelland, co-owner of One Lounge, the inspiration to start the Sunset Set jazz series came together through a stream of different ideas. For one, McClelland grew tired of having to sacrifice conversation for good music.

“I wanted to create an environment where people can listen to jazz and talk at the same time,” said McClelland. “Here, there are no drums, no horns and no shouting.”

McClelland also explained that he strives to do things that set his space apart from other bars in the city. For instance, One Lounge never charges a cover for its regular events and the owners of the bar can frequently be spotted bartending.

“We want to be ‘us,’ not what someone told us to be. And these guys,” said McClelland, pointing to the musicians as they played, “are One Lounge.”

So if you’ve had a particularly rough Tuesday and are looking for a place to relax and unwind from it all, or perhaps are just looking to shake up your weekly routine, head on over to One Lounge for some music that will be sure to set your mind at ease.

One Lounge will offer its free Sunset Set jazz series every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. with The Pete Muldoon Band.
