All Aboard! Join the Rail~Volution
If you live in the DC Metro Area, you know how traffic congestion, pollution, and lack of an adequate and affordable mass transportation system affect your quality of life. However, did you know that Washington has more bicycle commuters than any major city on the East Coast?
Things are changing in the Metro area, and that’s due to a movement dedicated to improving our quality of life through innovations in transit. The group behind this movement is called Rail~Volution and their annual conference is being held in DC beginning Sunday, October 16 and ending Wednesday, October 19.
In a nutshell, this conference brings together citizens, activists, professionals in government, civic and business leaders, environmentalists, and dedicated people from every sector of urban transportation, planning, architecture, design, and the public sector to meet and collaborate on ways they can:
- Make cities and suburbs healthier and more livable for their residents
- Increase public and private sector financial support for public transit initiatives
- Create integrated transit systems composed of pedestrian, bicycle, rail, metro, streetcar, and bus networks
- Increase citizen engagement in community planning
- Make Rail~Volution the nation’s leader in a new, collaborative approach to transit and community development
So go to the conference. Hear what people from around the country are thinking about and doing to change the way we move from one place to the other. This conference is more than just seminars, speeches, and meetings…there are rides too.
On Sunday there are many mobile workshops that offer attendees a chance to see the diverse transit projects proposed or in place throughout the DC Metro region. You can ride the proposed high-speed catamaran ferry on the Potomac River slated to connect North Woodbridge, Virginia to Washington, DC. Another ferry trip includes a visit to completed or proposed waterfront revitalization and commuter ferry projects along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers for National Harbor in Maryland, Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, and the Capitol Riverfront in Washington, DC. If you prefer to keep your feet on terra firma, take an easy bike ride to see some of the new projects for bikes. This tour includes a visit to Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), the Union Station Bicycle Station, the only secure bicycle station of its kind on the East Coast, the Metropolitan Branch Trail, and rides along the 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue cycle tracks, and the R Street bike lane.
