Ride Your Bike and Encourage Recycling at The Re-Cycle Parade
Junk is now the new thing in music, art and parades. In this case, it takes center stage in The Re-Cycle that’s part of DC Week, an annual tech and design conference.
Between November 6 and November 11, volunteers will construct a bicycle-powered float made from electronic waste and other scrap materials. The float is being constructed at BicycleSpace and it will lead The Re-Cycle procession on November 11 as it makes its way from the bike store at 459 I Street NW to the Arena Stage where the DC Week closing party is being held.
The Re-Cycle celebrates bicycles and encourages creative reuse of materials to prevent them from ending up in landfills. The visionaries behind this idea include Laurenellen McCann who works at a nonprofit by day and is an artist by night; Heather Bouley from SCRAP DC, a nonprofit that collects materials and donates them to the community for reuse in arts and design projects; Chris Ousley, a local musician; Howard Connelly, a local sculptor; Mike Newman, co-creator of another bike float called the Atlas Armada and Glory Edim from ScoutMob.
This unique project is partially funded by a grant from 24Hour City and by SCRAP DC. Everyone is encouraged to join in the fun, use the materials, scraps and bamboo poles to craft flags for their bikes, ride in the parade and help build the float.
The procession is promising to be quite a scene with all of the bicycles sporting their homemade flags. The float will resemble an abstract art installation with its electronic parts, welded metal and other recycled materials. Towed behind the float will be other mechanical devices created from scrap. Designer Howard Connelly has also built a huge tricycle for the parade and there will be a band playing music on instruments made from recycled junk and scraps.
