ReelAbilities Disabilities Film Festival DC-MD-VA

| 01/16/2012

The ReelAbilities Disabilities Film Festival débuts it’s DC tour this February. The award-winning national film festival promotes awareness and appreciation of the lives of people with different disabilities. Through features, documentaries and shorts it showcases their unique experience and highlights their artistic expression. The films present stories of people living with, and overcoming, extraordinary disadvantages including autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness and mental health issues.

There will be nine different films shown over eight days at six different DC metro area venues including the Arlington Artisphere, The Cinema Arts Theater, The Avalon & the JCC in Washington DC, Rockville MD, and Fairfax VA.

The opening night celebration will be held at the District’s historic Avalon Theatre. The event begins with hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 pm followed by the film at 7:30 pm. Attending the opening night party will be special guest speaker Richard Bernstein. Bernstein is a blind man who has spent his adult life fighting for the rights of the disabled. The featured film, Warrior Champions, profiles four Iraq War veterans who returned home with life-changing injuries that they strive to turn into Olympic dreams.
