What You Missed: A 1K Walk for Beer, Yes Beer

| 01/22/2012

Like any respectable race competition, it all starts with registration. You show up, pumped and energized, ready to dominate the scene… you get your race number, you safety pin it to your finest, luckiest race day athletic shirt and/or short shorts, and you’re ready to head toward the finish line for a victorious ending to a grueling speedy haul.

Well, this race wasn’t like that.

Nearly 2,000 beerthletes made their way through the 1k underground shops of Crystal City to make it to the finish line for Washington Wine Academy’s 1k Wine and Beer Walk! In this case, the finish line wasn’t really a thought on peoples’ minds, though. The real goal was probably just to make it to the next beer station to sample one more of the 50 craft brews.

Each guest was given a t-shirt, a race number, a wine glass, and ample amounts of sampling tickets to take through each station.

As I was making my way from beer to beer, I overheard one racer exclaim, “This is by far the best workout I’ve ever had.” And the best it was indeed. In this one, everyone came in first place.

Once participants reached the finish line, we were all joyously surprised to find a giant room filled with beer stations galore, a DJ, snacks, and dancing! It was the perfect end to a perfectly beerthletic race day. Check out some pictures from the event!
