Jack Rose’s New Bar Menu is Easy to Eat and Easy on the Wallet

| 02/15/2012

Psst! We’ve got a dining out exclusive you will love. Up to now, it’s been a juicy secret, but the folks at Jack Rose Dining Saloon want you to know—they’ve just launched their new bar menu—and it’s a huge hit.

So much about this retro hot spot in Adams Morgan screams food and fun. Unlike some overpriced trendy gastro pubs, Jack Rose serves terrific food that’s terrifically priced—everything on their bar menu is half price from 5:00 to 7:30 PM, seven days a week.

The menu’s selections are broken down into three distinct regions. There is The Isles, which includes food from the British Isles, The Colonies, which features new twists on traditional American dishes, and The Continents, which includes food from Asia and other parts of the world.

The Isles section of the menu includes homey, familiar comfort foods that go perfectly with the whiskies and drafts served at the bar. There’s a version of potpie called Pot Luck Pie made with a rotating chef’s selection of roasted meats and vegetables. Scotch Eggs are made with locally sourced eggs and rabbit sausage that’s made in-house, and you’ll feel like a kid again when you bite into the decadently oozing buttered toast sandwich that’s part of the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup combo. The sandwich trio of melted white Cheddar, Grayson, and Smoked Blue cheese do a duet with the tomato soup that’s sheer heaven.

Yanks and expat Brits will love the classic Fish & Chips. The secret to this dish’s deliciousness is in the quality of the fresh caught Atlantic white fish, which is delicate and flaky. Large chunks of fillets are coated in beer batter, fried until golden brown and crispy, and arrive with nary a hint of grease or fishiness. Just be prepared to defend your plate because these fish and chips are so mouth-watering crunchy your dining companions will be tempted to want a bite; but don’t give in. Let them order their own; trust us, you won’t want to share even one bite of your yummy fish fillets.

For American comfort food, The Colonies section of the menu includes Cheese Mac-Nuggets, Spice Grilled Prawns, and Baby Onion Rings. These onion rings bring new meaning to Beyoncé’s lyric “If you like her then you better put a ring on it.” These aren’t like any onion rings you’ve ever eaten before. As they are carried through the dining room, their delicate onion aromas perfume the air so enticingly you begin salivating before they even reach your table. These gossamer rings are gently fried in tempura batter to seal in the shallot’s sweet, earthiness so it floats across your palate.

If you want to know the answer to the question, “Where’s the beef?” It’s at Jack Rose. Order The Big Jack and it will McRuin your ability to eat a drive through burger ever again. Jack Rose’s burger is an epiphany of beef. It’s made with aged, prime beef, is hand shaped, and then is grilled over a charcoal flame so that the beef is flawlessly singed and the edges are tiny grilled diadems of beefy, smoky flavor.

The taste of meat bursts in your mouth, and the ratio of fat to beef makes this a juicy burger with the right amount of drip factor. That’s the amount of drip that begins to run down your hand when you have your lips around a luscious, meaty burger that’s packed with flavor. The Big Jack hits all of the right notes. It comes on a perfectly baked golden brown bun that’s light enough to maintain a balance between bread and meat, but not so light it falls apart from the weight and juice of burger. It’s dressed with shredded lettuce, a delicious whisky pickle sauce, melted Grayson cheese, and sautéed onions, but you can have your way too. Quench your thirst with one of the terrific 20 artisanal beers Jack Rose has on tap and you might just achieve carnivorous Nirvana.

The Continents section of the bar menu reveals foods that span the globe. Savory Ducks in a Roll are fried spring rolls stuffed with tender duck breast meat with a Chinese mustard sauce for dipping. The Jerk Cubano is an American twist on a Cuban classic made with spiced pork belly, American prosciutto, Thomasville cheese, pickles, and mustard. Potato Dumplings are a bit of the Old World stuffed with pork and cabbage, and the Queso Stuffed Peppers are fantastic.

Dipped in a soft cornmeal batter and fried, these little packages of jalapeño goodness are just spicy enough to whet your appetite. They are stuffed with goat and Cheddar cheese that become a sinfully gooey, cheesy pleasure that is heavenly dipped into the Tequila lime sauce that’s served with it.

As if all this weren’t enough to make you hungry, Jack Rose is also THE place to go for an incredible selection of liquid diversions. No matter what you choose to enliven your mood, they probably have it in their bar. With over 20 tasty, artisanal brews on draft, hand crafted cocktails, intelligent regional wines, and over 1400 hand selected scotches, bourbons, and spirits from around the world, you’ll want to spend the next decade familiarizing yourself with their library.

Jack Rose has it going on in the eye candy department too. The space is nothing short of spectacular and has a welcoming, familiar vibe, thanks to the attentive staff. They’ve practically got the corner on hip. That’s a fact Jack!
