SELECT: Washington Project for the Arts 2012 Art Auction and Gala

| 02/20/2012

Whether you’re looking to expand your personal art collection or just experience exceptional art for free, you don’t need to look any further than a temporary gallery on the corner of 18th and L St, NW. That is where you will find over 120 pieces of art, selected by some of the nation’s top curators, adorning the walls of a previous office space.

The exhibit–which is free and open to the public through March 2–is part of Washington Project for the Arts’ annual Art Auction and Gala. The artwork on display hails from established and emerging artists and includes a variety of mediums, such as photography, sculpture, screen prints and light installations.

If you fall head-over-heels for a one-of-a-kind piece, don’t sweat it! On March 3, you will have the chance to respond to “hey bidder, bidder” when all of the artwork is auctioned off at the Washington Project for the Arts’ 31st gala. Join about 400 guests and art aficionados for cocktails, dinner (with a menu designed by celebrity chef Barton Seaver), a live and silent auction and a party to celebrate art.

Half of the proceeds from the auction will go directly to the artists participating in the exhibit, while the other half will help fund a variety of programs and resources offered by the Washington Project for the Arts. These programs–such as photographing art, networking and obtaining commissions–help to support the creative spirit and success of local contemporary artists.

“Whatever we can offer to make their practice more successful is what we try to do,” said Lisa Gold, executive director of Washington Project for the Arts when explaining the plethora of the organization’s resources offered to local artists.

Tickets to the gala are available for the whole evening (cocktails, dinner and auction) and half the evening (the auction and drinks) and are available online at http://auction.wpadc.org. For those who can’t make the gala event but still hope to bid on the art, proxy bidding is available on the event’s website.
