THE ARTS
Art After Dark: Apocalypse
Art After Dark is back for its third year, and it’s bringing an apocalypse-themed evening of live music, cocktails and innovative art to downtown D.C. at the Art Museum of the Americas’ beautiful outdoor space.
A ticket to the event gets you the opportunity to mingle with friends and fellow art lovers while enjoying an evening of entertainment and an open bar of beer, wine and champagne. Some of D.C.’s favorite food trucks will even be on-site to satisfy your after-party food cravings.
Howard Theatre Grand Re-Opening
Washington D.C. has been abuzz with news of the Howard Theatre’s grand re-opening. The theatre’s triumphant return marks a culmination of the massive restoration effort lead by the non-profit Howard Theatre Restoration that began in September 2010.
This past Tuesday night, a crowd filled the theatre for a VIP Grand Opening Concert and Celebration of the Historic Howard Theatre. This truly diverse crowd – a mix of ages, races, genders, and styles unlike any I’ve seen in D.C. – demonstrated the theatre’s potential to become the universal cultural touchstone it once was.
PLTI goes to Metrostage for “Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You!”
Make plans to see a remarkable show that sold out in NY, Miami and LA! “Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You” is a show NYTheater.com called “a story filled with strength of character, laughter, identity, and hope.” Great theater is reason enough to buy but the tickets are for a great cause too.
Yuris Night is Back at Artisphere
On April 14th Artisphere will host an “out of this world art extravaganza” with 15 visual artists, 20 performers, and two bands. The “Wrath of Shock-a-Khan” featuring burlesque performances from DC and NYC starlets and a 45-minute performance as the S.S.S. Gagarin crew gets flown for a loop when their old Starfleet Academy buddy Shock-a-Khan comes to call.
Ah, Wilderness! At Arena Stage
Ah, the craziness of family! Ah, the agony and unpredictability of first love! Ah, the bliss of early 20th century America! That about sums it up for Ah, Wilderness! – A sweet and comedic performance on American life, American love and a classically dysfunctional American family.
The two-hour and 40 minute play, which features an almost entirely local cast, is showing now though April 8 at Arena Stage in Southwest, D.C.

Filmfest DC: Washington’s International Film Festival
You dominated Oscar’s this year. All of your bets were on “The Artist;” you nailed the best and worst dressed list; and you even predicted something sinister would happen to Seacrest on the red carpet. But somewhere in between Billy Crystal’s montage spoofs and Jennifer Lopez’s nip slip, something else happened – You were completely lost when four words were muttered: Best Foreign Language Film.
Find Your Inner Artist at ArtJamz
Looking to paint like Pollock without getting evicted from you white-walled apartment? Look no further than ArtJamz – a studio that provides the space and all of the supplies for your creative (and messy) endeavors. Oh yeah, and they provide the booze, too – You know, to help unleash your “talent.”
Since 2010, ArtJamz has worked more as a “pop-up” event, selecting specific dates and places throughout the city to host painting sessions. But owner, Michael Clements, recently settled the creative company in an 800 square foot studio in the heart of Dupont Circle.
On Wednesday evening, ArtJamz opened its doors to guests and the media for a preview of the new digs. The champagne was flowing and so were the creative juices, as guests contributed to a large communal canvas that will hang in the studio as a memento of the opening.
ArtJamz Dupont Studio Opening Events
Have you been to an ARTJamz event yet? I keep missing the pop-up gallery/bar/studio party, as it’s been jumping from venue to venue in the city for a year and half now. Luckily for us, they are opening their first stationary retail location in Dupont on March 9th! In case you’ve hiding under a rock and haven’t heard of it yet, ARTJAMZ is a participatory art studio & party which, until now, functioned as a pop-up event in unique venues across the city such as The Corcoran Gallery of Art, empty retail spaces in Crystal City and Dupont Circle, the General Walter Smith Mansion in Georgetown, and the Gibson Guitar Showroom.
Smokey Robinson to Perform at The Kennedy Center
Get your credit cards ready Motown music lovers, you have a chance to see a legend perform live. This singer-song writer’s music has been the soundtrack to our lives, and he really is the Motown sound.
So who is this titan of music? None other than the great Smokey Robinson. He will be appearing on Saturday, March 3, as part of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts’ Performance Series of Legends concert at The Kennedy Center.
SELECT: Washington Project for the Arts 2012 Art Auction and Gala
Whether you’re looking to expand your personal art collection or just experience exceptional art for free, you don’t need to look any further than a temporary gallery on the corner of 18th and L St, NW. That is where you will find over 120 pieces of art, selected by some of the nation’s top curators, adorning the walls of a previous office space.
The exhibit–which is free and open to the public through March 2–is part of Washington Project for the Arts’ annual Art Auction and Gala.
Cooking Up A Magical Evening With Elephant Room
Looking to cook-up a magical evening? Well for starters, cancel the over-priced dinner reservation, tone down the cologne and turn off the Marvin Gaye–because we have the recipe right here.
Start with the mystique of the great Houdini; add in one handful of trippy musical interludes (similar to those in The Big Lebowski); incorporate some amazing early 90s hairstyles (reminiscent of Wayne’s World); add a dash of George Michael; some insight from the Dali Lama; one packet of purple Kool-Aid; and top it all off with silly string.
