The Clean Water Network’s Earth Day Celebration
It’s hard to imagine what DC would look like if the city were not surrounded by water. There would be no sparking views of the Potomac from monuments, no canals to walk along in Georgetown, no falls to dip your toes in on the Billy Goat Trail and no hope of continued restoration and revitalization along the Anacostia.
So come celebrate the natural resource that makes our city so enjoyable with the Clean Water Network at the coalition’s Earth Day Celebration. The event, which will also commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, one of our nation’s landmark environmental laws, will take place on Sunday, April 22 from 3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at 1st and Potomac Avenue, SE.

National Race to End Women’s Cancer
Every where you turn there’s an event, blog post, or tweet about breast cancer — rightly so, it is October and the month for awareness on this horrific disease. While we’re on the subject of cancer it’s fitting to advise you that DC actually has the highest ovarian cancer mortality rate in the nation. Women in my family have been affected by both forms so I am cautious to ensure I follow the guidelines for early detection if warranted. And so should you. [There's a race for that! Read on....]
Support WWPR and Thrive DC With Help the Homeless Mini Walk
They might spend their days pitching reporters, creating communications plans and sending tweets but on weekends, these PR pros give back to their community. Washington Women in Public Relations (WWPR) plans to continue their tradition of helping others by sponsoring Fannie Mae’s 2011 Help the Homeless Mini Walk for their pro bono client, Thrive DC.

DivaFit’s Pole Showcase with Sarah Fraser
Taboo. Risqué. Scandalous. Objectifying. Strippers. These are terms that are normally associated with pole dancing, but these days you’ll find dance studios that are entirely dedicated to pole fitness. Take away the idea of a shady bar, dollar bills, and ladies taking their clothes off. Pole dancing has evolved into a new level of sport and athleticism, with dancers defying gravity with inverts, tricks, and advanced spins – some of which may take weeks or months to learn
Running DC and Making Friends While I’m at it
I started to run several years ago because I appreciated how it was just me and the road, and no one to bother me. But as I began training for my latest marathon, I realized that it was going to take a lot more than the promise of the open to road to motivate me away from bed in the wee hours on weekend mornings. I quickly discovered I needed moral support. Support from like-minded individuals who understood the payoff from getting up at the crack of dawn to run 18 miles on a given Sunday in the heat of summer. And that’s when I found the Distance Training Program, lead by Coach Taneen Carvell, with Potomac River Runners. I – along with 130 runners in the DC metro area – am whipped into shape every week with long distance runs and speed training sessions at Washington & Lee High School.
