In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge walked from the White House to the Ellipse to light a 48-foot fir tree. On December 1, 2011 the 89th National Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on the Ellipse in President’s Park at the White House. This year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever. For the first time, the pre-show and lighting ceremony will be streamed live and will be available on demand.
